    Default The Recommend a Film Thread

    Here is where you can get highly recommended films and ALSO can recomend a Film if your heart desires. Keep it to recs, not the last movie you just saw, but actually films that stood out to you as possibly one of your Favorites, they can be old, new, anything. Controversial films are more than welcome.

    Post a trailer if you can, and a summary of the film.

    For example:

    Dear Zachary: A Letter To A Son About His Father.

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtyY0CXdiNo"]Dear Zachary (2008) Movie Trailer - YouTube[/ame]

    Really emotional documentary, one of the best films i've ever seen. Basically its about a guy (Kuenne), who honors his friend (Andrew) by making a documentary about him(Andrew) to give to his son (Zachary) whom he'd never know because he was killed by the son's(Zachary's) mother. Really Deep Stuff. If you feel like shedding some tears and just watching a movie that somewhat gives you a detailed look at the justice system and how it works and how it fails, watch this.

    Life, Above all (2010)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTWZrLK2TME"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTWZrLK2TME[/ame]

    Life, Above All is a 2010 South African drama film directed by Oliver Schmitz. The film was selected as the South African entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 83rd Academy Awards and made the final shortlist announced in January 2011.

    Just after the death of her newly-born sister, Chanda, 12 years old, learns of a rumor that spreads like wildfire through her small, dust-ridden village near Johannesburg. It destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Sensing that the gossip stems from prejudice and superstition, Chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother and the truth. Life, Above All is an emotional and universal drama about a young girl (stunningly performed by first-time-actress Khomotso Manyaka) who fights the fear and shame that have poisoned her community. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart, it is based on the international award winning novel Chanda's Secrets by Allan Stratton.

    Children Of Heaven (1997)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqxvZeQsVzY"]Trailer for "Children of Heaven" - YouTube[/ame]

    The film is about a boy who loses his sister's shoes. He takes them to the cobbler for repairs, and on the way home, when he stops to pick up vegetables for his mother, a blind trash collector accidentally carries them away. The boy, named Ali, is afraid to tell his parents, and his sister, named Zahra, wants to know how she is supposed to go to school without shoes.
    The answer is simple, Zahra will wear Ali's sneakers to school every morning, and then run home so that Ali can put them on for his school in the afternoon. But Zahra cannot always run fast enough, and Ali, who is a good student, gets in trouble for being late to class.

    Children Of Heaven is first Iranian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

    16 Blocks (2008)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezuTzh19UeY"]16 blocks (2006) trailer - YouTube[/ame]

    Jack Mosley is an alcoholic and burned-out NYPD detective. After working all night, his lieutenant orders him to escort Eddie Bunker to testify in front of a grand jury before 10 a.m. Jack stops at a liquor store on the way; a gunman ambushes the car with Eddie inside. Jack kills the gunman and runs over his partner.
    They go to Jack's regular bar and he kicks everybody out. His call for backup brings Jack's ex-partner, Frank Nugent and several other cops. Frank explains that Eddie is about to testify against a cop, who will testify against others to save himself. Frank takes Jack's gun and gives it to Eddie. Forced, Eddie fires the gun but before his execution Jack uses the bar's shotgun and cripples the executor. Jack and Eddie run out the back door.
    Jack retrieves his spare handgun from his sister's apartment and disables one of the cops searching for him. Continuing the escort Frank's men chase Jack and Eddie; they escape behind a barricaded steel door, but find Frank waiting. Trapped, they try to flee using a broken elevator. Jack and Frank trade shots while discussing old memories. Frank tries to convince Jack it is not worth protecting Eddie. At the last second the elevator starts to work; Jack and Eddie ride it up and leave out the front door.
    Jack and Eddie enter an apartment building. Eddie knocks on random doors, finally an old Asian man lets them in. Frank's team searches the building floor to floor. In the apartment, Eddie changes clothes and describes his dream of opening a bakery. Jack calls the prosecuting attorney and tells her the address and room number, she sends more cops. Frank receives Jack's location from a mole but as his men break in they realize it is the wrong apartment. Jack walks down the stairs but finds Frank waiting. Jack had Eddie take a different route and Eddie is able to sneak up behind Frank and hold him at gunpoint.
    They steal a bus with passengers; ESU shoots the tires immobilizing the bus and creating a hostage situation. Jack forces the passengers to cover the windows with newspaper. Before ESU storms the bus Jack releases all the passengers while Eddie sneaks off in the confusion. Jack remains on the bus but the cops still believe that there are eight more hostages; the bus driver admits he was the last passenger. Eddie returns, yells for the cops not to shoot, and gets back on the bus. Jack drives the bus with ESU chasing them into an alley. ESU shoots Eddie but he and Jack escape into a building.
    Jack calls his sister, a paramedic, to mend Eddie's wound. Jack has his sister call an ambulance; inside Jack reveals to Eddie that he is one of the cops that Eddie was testifying against. Jack asks Eddie to leave, and leave the trial to him. Jack limps into the courthouse car park but runs into Frank. Jack confronts Frank about their crimes. Frank finally loses his cool and lets Jack get into an elevator but orders one of his men upstairs to kill him.
    Security surrounds Jack but he announces he is testifying instead of Eddie. Frank's man still tries to kill him but a SWAT sniper shoots him. Jack displays a tape recorder that recorded the conversation Frank and Jack had downstairs, and hands it to the prosecuting attorney. Frank stares miserably as the tape discloses his admission.
    Two years later, Jack is celebrating his birthday with his sister. For his crimes he spent two years in prison before being released. Eddie sends a letter and photos along with a cake of him and his new bakery (named Eddie and Jack's Good Sign Bakery) listing the names of people who have changed on the cake, including them.

    Mos Def's voice gets really annoying in the film though..

    The Guard (2011)

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRsMLuCP8a0"]The Guard - Official Trailer [HD] - YouTube[/ame]
    An unorthodox Garda (Irish policeman), named Boyle (Brendan Gleeson), joins forces with a straight-laced FBI agent, named Everett (Don Cheadle), to take on an international drug smuggling gang in Ireland's Connemara Gaeltacht.[2][3]
    A murder which appears to be the work of an occult serial killer is the first incident, the relevance of which is then revealed by Boyle in a briefing by an FBI agent, sent to liaise with the Gardai. A web of bribery, blackmail and killings ensues. Boyle and Everett form an unlikely alliance and bring about a bloody denouement.

    KIDS

    A bleak and uncompromising look at the dangerous world of New York street kids. The film focuses on the sexual experiences of Telly, a teen-aged seducer who desires only virgins. When Jennie -- who's had sex solely with Telly -- tests HIV positive, she frantically searches the city to tell him he's infected.

    there was a lot of rumor that there was no script for this film, that the director just let them freestyle their acting. But thats false, it was a script lol. Still a dope, eye opener to the dangers of unprotected sex and the ill informed teenager.

    A day in the lives of a group of average teenage high school students. The film follows every character and shows their daily routines. However two of the students plan to do something that the student body won't forget.

    I.E. Think.. umm columbine.

    i like to think the film is called elephant as to refer to the elephant in the room. it addresses what others wouldnt.

    The drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island individuals are shattered when their addictions become stronger.

    Drugs fuck up lives and this movie has a disturbing way of showing it

    One more..

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DILdeHgWF-U"]SLC Punk Trailer - YouTube[/ame]

    in my top 5 favorite films lol. Its not that controversial or anything its just a fuckin great movie.

    SLC Punk.

    What's it like being the only punk rockers in the biggest Mormon community in the world? Stevo (Matthew Lillard) and Heroin Bob (Michael Goorjian) provide the answer to this and other questions in SLC Punk. Stevo and Bob (whose name is actually an ironic reference to his fear of needles) are two friends fresh out of college who sport mohawks and blue hair, listen to hardcore and try to live up to their own anarchist ideals while figuring out what to do with their lives. Which wouldn't make them unusual in New York or Los Angeles, but they're fish out of water in Salt Lake City, Utah, where they drink beer, chase women and pick fights with "rednecks" along side a mixed bag of metalheads, hippies, hicks and posers who are fellow outcasts in the most clean-cut community in America. In the midst of all this, Stevo's dad hopes his son will follow in his footsteps and study law at Harvard; while Stevo surprisingly has the grades, he's not sure if he wants to go. Featuring a soundtrack of mid-80's punk from The Ramones, Minor Threat, The Dead Kennedys and others, SLC Punk was chosen as the opening-night feature at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

    Don't laugh at me but Mel Gibson's new flick "Get the Gringo" is pretty damn good. It has an 81% approval rating from Rottentomatoes too.
    I't about a career con who ends up in a Mexican prison. I highly recommend it you can get at Redbox or if you're too cheap to pay a dollar kick ass torrent.com
