HickoryRecord.com: NEWTON - Mid-morning Monday, a man accused of rape, kidnapping and assault appeared in district court from jail, via closed-circuit television.
Keith Campbell walked into view of the camera in his lime-green jumpsuit and sat down at a table with a microphone on it. While waiting for his case to be called, he sat stoically, only occasionally looking to the left or right of the concrete-blocked room. Campbell, 41, of Hickory, was in court Monday on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female and two counts of communicating threats. Campbell is accused of sexually assaulting the woman in the kitchen and screaming, "You're mine. You're not going anywhere. I'll kill you before you go back to that son of a *****. I own you," according to the arrest warrant. According to the search warrant, after the victim told Campbell she was leaving him, Campbell forced her to the master bedroom and onto the bed, where he restrained her hands to the bedposts with black straps. The victim said Campbell then sexually assaulted her and physically assaulted her, according to the search warrant. She said Campbell used a scalpel, cutting her in several places on her body. He then forced her to have sex. According to the arrest warrant, Campbell cut the woman, "with a deadly weapon, a box cutter, by cutting and carving 'Mine' onto the victim's stomach with a blade." Police searched Campbell's home on 18th Street, NE, on Saturday. They seized numerous items, including bedding and sheets, surgical lubricant from the bed, two black straps from the bedposts, a towel with blood spatter from the trashcan, guns, a razorblade from the master bedroom floor next to the bed, and miscellaneous drug paraphernalia from the kitchen table. Hickory police learned of the attack at about 4 a.m. Saturday, when the victim was able to get to Catawba Valley Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries. In court Monday, Judge Burford Cherry set Campbell's bond at $1 million. He told Campbell he was not to go on the premises of the witness, or threaten or intimidate her in any way. |
