Walmart raises some eyebrows by selling black barbies at half the price of white barbies?

Walmart caused a bit of a controversy when it was discovered that they are selling black Barbie Dolls for nearly half the price of white Barbie dolls at one of their stores and quite possibly others.
The black and white dolls are identical in appearance except for their skin tones. Mattel’s Ballerina Theresa dolls, which feature brown skin and dark hair, are stocked side by side with the white Ballerina Barbie dolls. Yet the black Barbies are marked on sale for $3.00 while the white Barbies have retained their $5.93 price tag.

The photo of the dolls, sitting next to each other on the shelves with different prices, first appeared on the humor Web site FunnyJunk.com and also on a Latino Web site Guanabee.com. The photo was taken at a Louisiana Walmart store. A Walmart spokesperson claims the store reduced the price of the Theresa dolls as part of the chain’s efforts to clear the shelves for the upcoming spring inventory.


"The implication of the lowering of the price is that [it's] devaluing the black doll," said Thelma Dye, the executive director of the Northside Center for Child Development, a Harlem, N.Y., organization founded by pioneering psychologists and segregation researchers Kenneth B. Clark and Marnie Phipps Clark. "While it's clear that's not what was intended, sometimes these things have collateral damage," Dye told ABC News.

Other experts concur with Dye. Walmart should have made the decision "that it's really important that we as a company don't send a message that we value blackness less than whiteness," said Lisa Wade, an assistant sociology professor at Occidental College in Los Angeles and the founder of the blog Sociological Images

I think the reason the black dolls are cheaper is because they don't sell alot anyway. And thats business, If something doesn't sell you lower the price. Someone did a study years back, and the conclusion was that even alot of black girls are choosing the white dolls over the black dolls.

now why is it that black girls r buying white dolls?? i dont think think its racist that theyre selling the black dolls 4 half the price but theres definitely something racist behind the fact that black girls wanna buy white dolls.

The media promote nothing but the white barbie dolls, They don't promote black barbies. So probally little girls will see the white dolls as the original and the black dolls as the bootleg verison.(just a guess)

Don't think it's racist at all. Probably just a mark down sale. My oldest daughter, who is six year old and is mixed, recieves gifts or I buy her black or white barbie dolls, it doesn't matter to her, she loves to play make believe with them. Some of her black friends, like to play with white barbies. To little kids, color doesn't matter. That is until they have a stupid parent who teaches them racism.

I have to agree wit u. the media is always promoting whites as superior. look at super heroes. why r they all white? and if u watch movies closely they always do some crazy shit wit blacks. like in a horror movie blacks r usually the first 2 die or they get the worst death. and if you watch disney channel most of the main characters r white and the only minority actors r background actors. Ravens an exception lol

Your the only one who sees racism in everything. The media doesn't promote whites as superior, it's all in your head. No shit super heros are white, most of them were invented during the 1920's-1950's.


Back on topic: Just like everyone else said, the dolls are on sale because there's no demand for them.
